This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Andrea Tsang Jackson of 3rdstoryworkshop.com. Andrea is a talented artist located in Halifax, Nova Scotia and has recently launched an incredible crowdfunded project called Our Song, Your Reflection, which can be found at http://3rdstoryworkshop.com/oursong.
The project brings together the quilting and maker communities and features the music of award-winning artist Meaghan Smith. This is an excerpt from the campaign site about the project:
“When Andrea entered the quilting world in 2016, she found a community of supportive and generous people who find joy in their work and through connecting with other quilters. She wanted to draw that out and highlight what that means to her to find a place where you belong. Through this collaboration with Meaghan, she is able to celebrate it in a unique way — with words, music and a design that expresses exactly the sentiment that many people feel. The unique aspect of the project is the way that people can share images of their own community through the music video. We want to hear your stories about how being part of a community has impacted you — your quilting guild, your sewing friends, your hockey team, your running club, your family, whoever your people are.”
I talked with Andrea about why she decided to work for herself and why she’s using technology including social media in a field traditionally dominated by…well…traditional mediums including things like markets.
We discuss the experiences Andrea has had thus far with her very first crowdfunding project and why she believes that this project is also about educating the public about what goes in to being an artist and a creator.
You can also find Andrea’s incredible work on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/3rdstoryworkshop/ and you can purchase her work from her Etsy shop at https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/3rdStoryWorkshop
This is a great conversation for creatives, designers, and those looking to explore their passions and turn their work from a hobby into their full time gig.
